To accelerate the adoption of electric mobility and meet climate targets, the Federal Council adopted a resolution on October 18, 2024, urging the further expansion of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. <\/strong> This initiative aims to boost e-mobility, support climate objectives, and provide relief to Germany\u2019s struggling automotive industry. The resolution also underscores the importance of investment in electricity grids and renewable energy as integral to this effort.<\/p>\n

The Federal Council stresses that expanding charging infrastructure alone is insufficient. The process must occur alongside significant investments in electricity grid expansion. Moreover, the share of renewable energy in the grid must continue to grow to ensure a climate-friendly energy supply for charging stations.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fast charging network for heavy goods vehicles<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another point in the council resolution is the expansion of a nationwide fast-charging network for trucks. To this end, fast-charging stations are to be set up at around 350 rest areas across Germany – under the coordination of the federal government’s Autobahn GmbH. According to the Federal Council, the project is an \u201cimportant and necessary step towards strengthening e-mobility in heavy goods traffic\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, concerns were raised regarding ongoing legal disputes at the European Court of Justice. These disputes involve the federal government\u2019s Autobahn GmbH and its awarding of contracts to the Tank & Rast Group for expanding fast-charging infrastructure at freeway service stations. The Federal Council warns that these legal challenges could delay progress on the project.<\/p>\n

In addition to infrastructure development, the resolution emphasizes the need for robust government incentives to stimulate the electric vehicle market. While the federal government\u2019s initiative to promote fully electric company cars is welcomed, the Federal Council calls for the reintroduction of broader funding instruments. These incentives should prioritize social equity and climate protection measures, ensuring a balanced and inclusive approach to fostering e-mobility.<\/p>\n

This resolution reflects the urgency of comprehensive action to strengthen Germany\u2019s position in the global transition to sustainable transport while addressing climate goals and economic challenges.<\/p>\n
